Can you believe it?
Southern Cal decides to rain, I mean pour with rain all day Friday, the type of rain you expect in England (unfortunately both summer and winter these past few years) and during a typical New Zealand winter. It did not stop all day! Trust me -it was very unusual for Southern Cal. You had to only look at the I5 freeway and see that no one knew how to drive in the wet stuff! I didn't mind the rain as I had running on the schedule and so it was a blast..absolutely got drenched in the downpour but it was lots of fun!!
Doing hill repeats Saturday morning in the wind and rain however was no fun and yes I had to harden up and get the training done but I was less than enthusiatic. Chris reminded me of the fact that the Torrey Pines climb did not compare to anything in Ethiopia....it's not even a foothill said the natural born billy goat with climbing legs that nailed and won the time trial ascent of the Blue Nile Gorge in this years TDA race. His comment was not lost on me and so the reluctant cyclist got her butt out there and got it over and done with.
Just as well because when I got home after my training session we had two visitors. Jack Van Der Veen the tour leader from TDA 2007 and Dean Campbell the bike mechanic also from TDA 2007. Dean was down from Toronto, Canada on business and was visiting Jack in Riverside and so they decided to pop on over to the coast to see us. We caught up over a long lunch, swapping stories and then visited the local bike stores. After living with us for 4 months in Africa and seeing one or the other wearing the red B & L cycling jersey it was only fair that we show them the actual store. Chris managed to talk the boys into sampling the delights of our sauna and cold dunk tub and so that was enough for them to end up staying the night. I took Dean out for a 2 hour easy ride the next next morning and I may have pushed his envelope..te! he! nothing like a hard ride for the boy!! Poor Jack had to watch us all geared up and ride off into the sunrise. He broke his collar bone only weeks earlier and it was very frustrating for him not to be with us out riding.
It was great to see them both and especially cool to swap TDA 2007 photos.
Ok I'm out of here.
Cheers
Here's a thought.....
Standing in the middle of the road is very dangerous; you get knocked down by the traffic from both sides.

...........ahhh! just as well there are no solid roads in parts of Africa where I'll be traveling.......one just has to choose a side, choose a path and pedal!!

pushed my envelope? More ripped it open, though I wouldn't have it any other way... Beautiful ride, and it's forced me to get back out on my bike. I figure this cold weather riding has to be good for me somehow. That's what I have to tell myself when it's -15 up here.
